Plot summary
Imprisoned in Czechoslovakia in 1950 because of his wartime service in the RAF, František Sláma recalls 1939, when Germany invaded and the Czechoslovak Army was disbanded. He and his young friend Karel Vojtíšek refuse to submit to the occupiers and escape to England to join the RAF. The British put the Czechoslovak fliers through basic training again, which infuriates Karel, impatient to fight; the Battle of Britain soon puts them in the air. When Karel's Spitfire is shot down, he survives and reaches the farm of Susan Whitmore, a young Englishwoman who thinks him too young. The next day he brings Franta to meet her, and Franta is drawn to Susan too.
