Simon Callow
Biography
Simon Callow is an English actor known for his stage and screen work. Born in Streatham, South London, he trained at the Drama Centre London and first appeared on stage in 1973. His comedic turns in A Room with a View (1986) and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) each brought him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He acted in Maurice (1987). Later he appeared in Shakespeare in Love (1998). On television, he played Tom Chance in Chance in a Million. He took the role of the Duke of Sandringham in Outlander from 2014 to 2016. First role
After sending a fan letter to Laurence Olivier, the National Theatre's artistic director, Callow got a reply that suggested he work on their box-office staff. Watching actors rehearse there, he realized he wanted to act.
Big break
Callow originated the title role of Mozart in the 1979 premiere of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the National Theatre, a part he later wrote he was ready for because the composer's music was already part of his musical landscape.
First role
Callow's first television role, in a 1975 episode of Carry On Laughing called "Orgy and Bess", was cut from the final print.
