Plot summary
In ancient Egypt, the sun god Ra sent the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun to shield his people from the demon Set, who had escaped the Underworld; Tutankhamun overcame him and, with Ra's blessing, split an emerald tablet into four parts, scattering them to distant corners of the world at the cost of remaining in the Underworld himself. In 1922, the archaeologist Danny Fremont had found three of the tablet's pieces, but his rival Morgan Sinclair seized them. Sinclair answers to the Hellfire Council, a secret committee of powerful men who want the tablet's power to rule the world, and he uses its influence to ruin Fremont's reputation until Fremont loses his job. Fremont gathers his friends and persuades the skeptical Egyptologist Azelia Barakat to join his search for Tutankhamun's tomb, where the last piece is believed to lie.
