Biography

Peter Bogdanovich was an American director, film historian, and critic who also worked as a writer, actor, and producer. Born in Kingston, New York, he studied acting under Stella Adler before becoming a film journalist for Esquire and Film Culture. He made his credited feature debut with Targets (1968), then broke through with The Last Picture Show (1971), which earned Academy Award nominations for directing and adapted screenplay. He followed it with What's Up, Doc? (1972) and Paper Moon (1973). His later films included Saint Jack (1979), Mask (1985), Noises Off (1992), The Cat's Meow (2001), and She's Funny That Way (2014). His documentary features included Directed by John Ford (1971), and he made The Great Buster: A Celebration (2018). He won a Grammy for Best Music Film for Runnin' Down a Dream (2007). As an actor, he appeared in The Sopranos and helped finish The Other Side of the Wind (2018). He died in 2022.

Early training
After finishing at New York City's Collegiate School in 1957, Bogdanovich went on to train in acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory.
Big break
Bogdanovich got his directing break when Roger Corman, sitting behind him at a screening, offered him a job after liking his Esquire piece.
About the name
Under the pseudonym Derek Thomas, Bogdanovich made Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women. He also worked with Corman on Targets, a film that starred Boris Karloff.
