Plot summary
Abdul Karim, a prison clerk from Agra in British India, is sent to Britain for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and brings the Queen a gold mohur struck in India as a gift. The Queen, lonely and weary of the courtiers who flatter her, takes an interest in the newcomer. He becomes her Munshi, and she asks him for lessons in Urdu and the Quran. On learning that he is married, she summons his wife and mother-in-law from India. Victoria treats Abdul as a son, though her household and inner circle resent his rise, among them Bertie, her son, and the prime minister, Lord Salisbury.
