Plot summary
In 1843, Charles Dickens is under financial pressure. His last three books failed, and a new one is meant to restore his finances. When his publishers will not bring out a Christmas book in time for the holiday, he decides to publish it himself, with six weeks to work in. London supplies him with ideas: a wealthy man's funeral with hardly any mourners, and a mean-spirited old man who says "Humbug". From these he builds a Christmas story, and the characters he imagines begin to appear before him as he writes, Ebenezer Scrooge above all. Tara, the Irish nursemaid who tends his children and reads widely, discusses the story with him. Friends and publishers tell him a Christmas book will fail, since few people in England celebrate the holiday.
