Plot summary
On the set of a film near the end of shooting, actress Suzanne Vale fumbles her lines and director Lowell Kolchek blames her cocaine use. Producer Jack Faulkner wakes beside her one morning, then hurries her to a hospital when she will not respond. She has overdosed, and her mother, the veteran actress Doris Mann, has her admitted to a rehab center. Suzanne wakes with no memory of the night, learns her stomach was pumped, and insists she is not suicidal. Doris arrives late to a family group session, and old tension rises. Dr. Frankenthal, who treated her in the emergency room, sends flowers. Once Suzanne is fit to work, her agent Marty Weiner explains that the studio's insurance covers her only on the condition that she share a home with someone dependable, which in practice means Doris.

- Debbie Reynolds wanted to play the mother, Doris, but director Mike Nichols cast Shirley MacLaine instead. In her 2013 autobiography, Unsinkable, Reynolds recounted that Nichols told her, “You're not right for the part.”
- Director Mike Nichols began pre-production in New York by gathering a group of actors, including Annette Bening, just to read through and refine the script aloud; as a thank-you, he later gave several of them small roles once the film actually shot.
- Actor Jerry Orbach actually filmed a scene playing Suzanne's father for Postcards from the Edge, but the scene was later cut from the finished film entirely.
