Biography
Joanna Lumley is a British actress and presenter who also writes, produces television and once worked as a model. Born in Srinagar in 1946, she attended the Lucie Clayton Finishing School in London after the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art rejected her at 16. She modeled for three years before acting in 1969, with early parts in Some Girls Do and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. She appeared in Coronation Street before her first major role, Purdey in The New Avengers from 1976 to 1977, followed by Sapphire in Sapphire & Steel. Her career was boosted by Absolutely Fabulous, where she played Patsy Stone. Films include The Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973), James and the Giant Peach (1996), Maybe Baby (2000), Ella Enchanted (2004), Corpse Bride (2005), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016). She was nominated for a BAFTA for A Rather English Marriage (1998) and a Tony Award for La Bête.

Early training
At 16, Lumley was rejected by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, so she went to the Lucie Clayton Finishing School in London instead.
First role
Lumley started acting in 1969, taking a small uncredited part in the film Some Girls Do. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service she played the English girl among Ernst Stavro Blofeld's "Angels of Death" and had two lines.
Big break
Lumley landed her first major part as Purdey in The New Avengers, which followed the secret agent show The Avengers. She appeared in every one of its twenty-six episodes between 1976 and 1977.
A role that slipped away
Sydney Newman, a television producer, put Lumley forward for the Doctor in 1986, but the suggestion did not go anywhere.
