Trailer

Plot summary

Civil war divides Thailand between General M. Bison's forces and the Allied Nations under Colonel William F. Guile. Bison's troops seize 63 relief workers and, in a live broadcast, demand a twenty billion dollar ransom within three days. Colonel William F. Guile refuses the demand and vows to bring the warlord to trial. His assistant, Lieutenant Cammy White, can narrow Bison's position only to the river delta outside the city. One of the captives is Guile's friend, Sergeant Carlos "Charlie" Blanka, taken to the lab of the scientist Dr. Dhalsim as the first supersoldier subject. The American con artists Ryu Hoshi and Ken Masters attempt to sell fake weaponry to the arms dealer Viktor Sagat, who puts Ryu in a cage fight against his champion, Vega.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Street Fighter (1994)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Raul Julia was suffering from cancer while Street Fighter was being made. Steven E. de Souza had meant to shoot Julia's less demanding scenes first, but on seeing his weakened state he rearranged the schedule, so cast members were sometimes trained only hours before their scenes.
  • Before Jean-Claude Van Damme was cast as Colonel William Guile, Steven Seagal had already been signed to play the part, and the change handed the role to Van Damme instead.
  • Kylie Minogue was cast as Cammy White because the Australian Actors' Guild asked director Steven E. de Souza to hire an Australian actor, and by the time the request arrived Cammy was the only part still uncast.
  • Steven E. de Souza wanted helicopters for the attack on Bison's hide-out, but political instability in neighboring Myanmar made that impossible, so in the finished script the Allied Nations troops attack by boat instead.
  • The MPAA first rated the film R, which Capcom rejected: after cuts were made, de Souza said it came back a G, and an added expletive in post-production pushed it up to the PG-13 Capcom had demanded.
  • Raul Julia took the part of General M. Bison because his children were huge fans of the Street Fighter video games.
  • SPOILERThe scene after the credits, in which Bison is revived, was left out of the theatrical release as a mark of respect for Raul Julia but kept for the home video and DVD versions.
  • Raul Julia's turn as M. Bison brought him a posthumous Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor; he died of a stroke two months before the film came out, and it is dedicated to his memory.
