Plot summary
Adam and Mary are both approaching sixty, and the change lands on each of them differently. Mary, a retired teacher, reworks their London house so it suits their age, fitting it out for the years ahead. Adam refuses the idea and holds fast to his progress as an architect. The two live next door to Mary's mother, Nora, who brought her daughter up in Italy. When Mary is troubled by a spell of forgetfulness, her doctor tells her to stay active.
