Plot summary
In twelfth-century Sweden, Arn Magnusson is born into the powerful Folkung family and grows up in a Cistercian monastery. There a former Knight Templar named Guilbert teaches him archery, swordsmanship and horsemanship, and the monks discover he is ambidextrous. In the woods he kills two men who attack him when he answers a girl's plea for help, and the monks accept that he acted in self-defense. Arn leaves the monastery for his family, whose house is caught in the contest among the great families of Västra Götaland for the crown. He falls in love with Cecilia Algotsdotter, and the two are excommunicated for their relations before marriage and sentenced to twenty years of penance, she in a convent and he to the Holy Land as a Knight Templar.
