Plot summary

Caro Drake's childhood was upended when her father's double life came to light and he was arrested, leaving her mother to raise her alone. Caro grows fiercely independent and skeptical of faith, putting her academic career first. A scholarship takes her to Oxford for a DPhil, where she meets Kent Weber, a fellow student who is open about his Christian beliefs. Their first exchange is brief, but Kent's candor stays with her. In classes and among friends, Caro encounters professors and students who argue about belief, reason and what gives life meaning, and the debates push her to question convictions she has long held. Her friendship with Kent deepens over talks about faith, literature and life, and she finds herself drawn to his openness while weighing what matters most to her.
