Biography

Jim Carter is an English actor who began performing professionally in the early 1970s with the Brighton Combination, a fringe theater group he joined after leaving university. He built a long stage career with companies including the National Theatre, the Young Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and later became best known as Mr Carson in the historical drama Downton Abbey, a role that brought him four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for outstanding supporting actor. He returned to the part in the films Downton Abbey (2019), Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022) and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025). His screen credits include A Private Function (1984), Richard III (1995), Brassed Off (1996), Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Golden Compass (2007), My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Good Liar (2019) and Wonka (2023). He also played Captain Brown in the BBC series Cranford and narrated the documentary series Home Front Britain.

    Carter's first paid acting job was in Howard Brenton's play Gum and Goo with the Brighton Combination, earning five pounds a week with free board and lodging.

  2. Early training

    Carter studied Law at the University of Sussex, where he appeared with the Drama Society and played the title role in Serjeant Musgrave's Dance. After two years he dropped out to join a fringe theater group in Brighton.

  3. Own stunts

    In 1978 Carter went to America, where he studied at a circus school and learned juggling, unicycling and tightrope walking.
