Plot summary
The Viceroy's Palace in New Delhi, March 1947: its five hundred servants are preparing for the arrival of Lord Mountbatten, who has just been appointed the last Viceroy of India by Clement Attlee. His task is to see British India through to independence, and to settle the disagreement between Jawaharlal Nehru, who wants a single Indian nation, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who wants a separate Muslim state of Pakistan. His wife Edwina and their daughter Pamela move into the palace with him. Downstairs, Jeet Kumar, a valet, and Aalia Noor, a Muslim servant, fall in love, and their different faiths stand in the way.
