Plot summary
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson answer the plea of Irene St. Claire, whose father, a former army captain in India during the Great Indian Mutiny, has become a hopeless opium addict. At the siege of Agra in 1857 he and his fellow conspirators stole a maharajah's treasure and sealed their secret with a blood pact, a theft bound up with murder and betrayal. Guilt and fear over that pact have made him dependent on opium. When another man from the pact dies under mysterious circumstances, her father is certain that the curse on the stolen fortune will reach him next.
