Biography

Maury Chaykin was a Canadian and American actor who became one of Canadian cinema's most familiar faces, most often in supporting parts. He was born in Brooklyn, grew up in New York City, took up drama studies at the University at Buffalo, and moved to Toronto in 1974. Early film recognition came as a computer programmer in WarGames (1983) and a prosecution witness in My Cousin Vinny (1992), and he played an Army fort commander in Dances with Wolves (1990). One of his rare leading parts came in Whale Music (1994), which brought him the Genie Award for Best Actor. On television he first played detective Nero Wolfe in The Golden Spiders, then headlined A Nero Wolfe Mystery for two seasons, and later starred as Sam Blecher in Less Than Kind. He won two Gemini Awards, two Canadian Comedy Awards, and a posthumous ACTRA Award, and died in 2010.
