Plot summary
Detectives in Wichita, Kansas, have spent decades on a series of killings. The man behind them bound and strangled people in their homes, took keepsakes, and sent letters to newspapers and television stations describing what he had done and signing himself BTK. In 1979 the letters stopped and the case went cold. Detectives Jason Magida and Baines work the inquiry, and a local author writes a book about the unsolved crimes. In 2004 the letters return, some carrying photographs of a crime scene, a stolen driver's license, fake identifications and word puzzles, and the sender hints he will kill again. Investigators collect DNA evidence and test samples from hundreds of men, among them police officers and professors.

- In 1978, Wichita police flashed a subliminal message reading "Now call the chief" and an upside-down glasses drawing during a KAKE evening newscast, hoping BTK would turn himself in. The attempt failed.
- Stephen King said the BTK killer inspired his novella A Good Marriage and the film made from it. Thomas Harris said Francis Dolarhyde in his 1981 novel Red Dragon is partly based on the then-unidentified BTK killer.
