Plot summary
After an office party, Sylvia Wentworth is in the Baltimore apartment of Terry Lambert, an employee of her husband's construction firm, when she looks out the bedroom window and sees a man grab a young woman in the street below. The assailant flees and the woman is saved, but that same night another woman is found murdered nearby. Sylvia cannot come forward without exposing the affair, so Terry telephones the police and claims that he was the one at the window, telling them what she saw. Detectives Quirke and Jessup take his account as a lead and call him in to a lineup, where the woman from the street, Denise Connelly, cannot identify her assailant either.

- Steve Guttenberg was not Curtis Hanson's first choice for the lead of Terry: producer Dino De Laurentiis suggested him, thinking that if the film wasn't successful at least its lead would be a young actor known for comedy, and Hanson cast him after they had dinner together.
- Curtis Hanson only got to adapt Anne Holden's novel The Witnesses after learning Paramount had held the film rights for 15 years; he made a deal with the studio to write the script, adding the character of Denise, the assaulted waitress.
