Plot summary
The Newton family lives with Beethoven, their St. Bernard. The dog slips out and meets Missy, a female St. Bernard whose owner is Brillo. Brillo's estranged wife Regina arrives with her boyfriend Floyd and takes Missy, threatening to keep the dog unless Brillo agrees to a $50,000 alimony settlement. Beethoven helps Missy escape from the apartment Regina and Floyd share, and the two dogs become a pair. Months later, Ted and Emily follow Beethoven and find four puppies in the basement of the building where Regina and Floyd live.

- Production required more than 100 smooth- and rough-coated St. Bernard puppies of various ages, starting at seven weeks, who were returned to the breeders afterwards. Missy was played by three adult short-haired dogs, and a mechanical dog, a dog's head for specific facial expressions and a man in a dog suit were also used.
- The film was Danny Masterson's screen debut; his younger brother Christopher also had a small role, but the producers removed him when they noticed the resemblance between the two.
- The theme song "The Day I Fall in Love", performed by James Ingram and Dolly Parton and written by Ingram, Carole Bayer Sager and Clif Magness, was nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a Grammy.
- The film received negative reviews from critics but was a commercial success, grossing $118.2 million worldwide against a $15 million budget.
- No sequel was planned at first; this one was only produced after the unexpected financial success of the previous film.
