Plot summary
Bart Hughes, an investment banker in New York City, has moved into a brownstone he helped renovate, together with his wife Meg and son Peter. Meg's father Milton has invited them all to Vermont for a vacation, but Bart stays behind to finish a project he expects will earn him a promotion. The project goes to another employee, James Hall, and Bart's boss, Eliot Riverton, hands him a reorganization plan due in two weeks instead. That evening a leak from the dishwasher floods the kitchen, and Clete, the superintendent of a neighboring building, says a rat made the hole in the drainage hose. Clete tells him that rats can survive almost anything, and that the females are the more vicious ones. Bart sets traps, and the next day the bait is gone and the traps are damaged.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The interior scenes were shot on a soundstage set recreating a Manhattan brownstone, designed by Anne Pritchard, and the film was shot largely in sequence so that the set could be systematically "maimed" as the story progressed.
- Screenwriter Taggert based the character of Bart Hughes on his own stepfather, a man he described as being obsessed with cleanliness and order.
