Plot summary
Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins served in World War II and has lost his job at Champion Aircraft. It is the summer of 1948, and he owes payments on his Los Angeles house. Joppy, a bartender, brings Easy to meet DeWitt Albright, who works as a private investigator and is white. Albright is trying to locate Daphne Monet, a white woman who has gone missing. Her rich fiancé, Todd Carter, left the race for mayor after she vanished. Albright hires Easy to look for Daphne, who often visits the juke joints on Central Avenue.
