Bartleby (2001) on Netflix

Plot summary

The Boss runs a public records office staffed by three people: Ernest, Rocky and Vivian. Driving to work one day, he spots a man standing on an overpass. A heavier workload pushes him to advertise a fourth position, and the only applicant is that man, Bartleby, who says he spent eight years at a dead letter office that moved. Bartleby answers the Boss's questions vaguely, and his quiet, off-kilter manner unsettles the Boss, who hires him anyway. The new clerk is a model employee at first, finishing a week of work in days. His first refusal comes over a request to help verify important documents, and from then on he answers nearly every request the same way. He files documents and nothing else, and stares at a vent above his desk.
