Plot summary
Francis, a tax auditor for Revenue Canada, spends his evenings at Exotica, a Toronto strip club, where he always asks for Christina, a dancer who performs in a schoolgirl uniform. Eric, the club's DJ, introduces Christina onstage though she is his former girlfriend, and he resents the attention she gives this customer. Eric is involved with Zoe, the club's owner, who is expecting his child. Away from the club, Francis pays Tracey, his brother Harold's teenage daughter, to stay at his home while he is out, and his dealings with Harold are strained. At work, Francis is assigned to audit Thomas, the owner of an exotic pet store.

- Arsinée Khanjian, Atom Egoyan's wife, played strip club owner Zoe and was pregnant during filming; Egoyan later said he regretted surrounding her with nude women while she was unsure how her first pregnancy would change her body.
- To save money, director Atom Egoyan's own 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon was used as Francis Brown's car in the film.
- Art directors Richard Paris and Linda Del Rosario built the Exotica strip club set inside an unused room of the Party Centre, a Toronto building, from May 1993; during production some people turned up believing it was a real club.
- Exotica won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the first time an English-language Canadian film had won that honor.
- Bruce Greenwood got his role after meeting Atom Egoyan through a mutual friend in a bar, back when the director had not yet raised his international profile.
