Peter Boyle
Biography
Peter Boyle was an American character actor who worked in film, television, and theater. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he trained with Uta Hagen at HB Studio and performed with The Second City before his breakthrough as a bigoted factory worker in Joe (1970). He became known for both dramatic and comedic roles, including the campaign manager in The Candidate (1972), an Irish mobster in The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), and the monster in Young Frankenstein (1974). Other films included Taxi Driver (1976), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), The Shadow (1994), That Darn Cat (1997), and The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002). On television, he played Frank Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2005, receiving seven Emmy nominations, and won an Emmy for his guest appearance on The X-Files in 1996. He also received a Screen Actors Guild Award. He died in 2006.

A role that slipped away
Boyle turned down the lead role in The French Connection in 1971 after seeing audiences cheer the violence of his character in Joe, and he also rejected other parts he felt glamorized violence.
Early training
In New York City, Boyle trained with acting coach Uta Hagen at HB Studio. To support himself, he also worked as a maitre d' and a postal clerk.
First role
In 1963, Boyle was hired for the opening season of the Wayside Theatre. That year, one of his starring roles was in Tennessee Williams's Summer and Smoke.
Big break
Boyle won acclaim for his first starring role, playing the title character in the 1970 movie Joe, a bigoted factory worker in New York City. Its release stirred controversy over violence and language.
