Plot summary

Fred Cheaver, a middle-aged staff sergeant, is done with his last tour and flying home to St. Louis, where his wife and son live. Colee Dunn and T.K. Poole are each on thirty-day leave and each bound for Las Vegas. Colee wants to call on the parents of the soldier she was seeing, killed in action after he saved her life; T.K., left impotent by a shrapnel wound, hopes a sex surrogate can help him before he sees his girlfriend again. A blackout strands the three at JFK, where no flights are leaving, so they rent a minivan and head west together.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Lucky Ones (2008)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Burger intentionally avoided mentioning Iraq because he wanted the audience to concentrate on the heart of the characters rather than the specific war they were fighting; the film is the first Iraq War-related Hollywood project the Army has supported by providing personnel and technical help.
  • Screenwriter and director Neil Burger decided to write the script after filming The Illusionist in Prague, where the Iraq War was frequently debated, and drew on The Last Detail for its seriocomic mood, episodic structure, an odd religious detour and a meeting with prostitutes.
