Plot summary

In 1955, Jean Holman is raising two boys on her own. Her husband, a soldier, was reported missing in action in the Korean War and is presumed dead. Eleven-year-old Tom misses his father and feels left out of the community's father-and-son activities, baseball and camping. Jean is worried about Gunny, who is five, and about the stomach pains his doctors cannot diagnose. Driving with her sons one day, she accidentally hits a drifter, Jack McCloud, and breaks his leg. She invites him and his dog, Betty Jane, to stay until the leg heals. Jack has trouble adapting to the household at first, but the family grows fond of him and wants him to stay, and he begins teaching Tom baseball.
