Plot summary
Lieutenant Commander Patrick Michael Williamson, a U.S. Navy pilot, is shot down during a raid over North Vietnam. He and his radar intercept officer, Mason, eject. Mason is badly injured and cannot walk. Armed civilians find them; Williamson is taken away and held at Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi. The camp commandant, Major Ngo Doc, questions him, but Williamson gives only his name, rank and service number. Ngo Doc orders him into extended solitary confinement. For nearly a year Williamson is held alone. When his isolation ends, he is moved into a cell with three other American prisoners. The men face starvation, torture and isolation as their captors try to break their will.
