Plot summary
In a Portland, Oregon suburb, Maddie Wirtz is finishing high school and intends to coast through her last year before college. Then Legs, a drifter, slips into her school out of the rain and talks Maddie, Rita Faldes and Violet Kahn into confronting Mr. Buttinger, a teacher who has been harassing Rita and Violet. The confrontation turns violent and the girls flee, joined by Goldie Goldman, who saw it. All four are suspended. Legs turns up at Maddie's house after finding the address in a notebook Maddie dropped, and the five of them adopt an abandoned house as a headquarters, slipping back into the school for Maddie's art school application and marking themselves with matching flame tattoos.
