Plot summary
Mark Bannister works as a stockbroker, and Jessie, his wife, is a television reporter and anchorwoman. The couple live an idyllic life in California until Mark's cousin Fred, together with Fred's pregnant wife Bernice and her cat Scruffy, comes to stay. Mark hands the pair $300 to spend around the city, and his time alone with Jessie is interrupted again when Jessie's sister Claudia arrives after a fight with Kaddir, her wealthy Middle Eastern husband. A visit planned for five days stretches on after Bernice falls while walking toward the car, and Dr. Penix tells her she must remain there until the baby is born. Dale, the carpenter who lives next door, builds a machine that keeps Bernice comfortable in bed all day.
