Plot summary
Tobe is sixteen and lives in the San Fernando Valley with her father Wade, a lawman, and her younger brother Lonnie. On a trip to the beach with friends, she stops for gas and meets Harlan, the attendant who wears a cowboy hat and says he has worked as a ranch hand. She invites him along, he accepts, and the outing costs him his job. The two begin seeing each other, and Harlan, more than twice her age, grows convinced she is his soul mate. Wade objects, and Tobe rebels against him. Harlan presses for the two of them to leave her father behind, and Wade grows suspicious of the older man.
