Plot summary
Raised by missionary parents in Africa and the Middle East, Lana arrives in the United States from the West Bank. In Los Angeles she takes a job at a homeless mission and seeks out Paul, her late mother's brother and the only family she has in the country. Paul is a Vietnam veteran traumatized by the war, and he drives around with a camera, filming and spying on Arabs and on people with Arab features, convinced they are planning terrorist acts on American soil. Her years overseas have left Lana with anti-war convictions, and American culture feels foreign to her; the poor neighborhoods of Los Angeles remind her of the Third World.
