Plot summary
Molly Stewart lives two lives. On school days she is a fifteen-year-old honor student at a private preparatory school in Los Angeles. After dark she becomes Angel, a prostitute in a leather mini-skirt and high heels who works Hollywood Boulevard. Her street family includes the aging film cowboy Kit Carson, the street performer Yo-Yo Charlie, the drag performer Mae, the prostitutes Crystal and Lana, and her landlady, the painter Solly Mosler. A nameless serial killer has begun stalking and murdering prostitutes, and Lieutenant Andrews of the Los Angeles police is assigned to the case and has no leads. At school, her teacher Patricia Allen asks Molly why she takes part in no extracurricular activities. Molly tells her that her mother had a stroke, cannot move, and needs her at home right after classes.

- While filming Angel, producer Don Borchers found that Cliff Gorman had swapped a real gun for a prop gun in a scene where the script called for a prop gun to be fired at Donna Wilkes. Borchers wanted to call the police but was talked out of it because the film would have shut down.
- Cliff Gorman and Donna Wilkes had feuded while making the pilot of the sitcom Hello, Larry: he teased her about her height, she mocked his glass eye, and he chased her and smashed in her dressing-room door. Gorman was fired from the sitcom and replaced by McLean Stevenson.

Test audiences disliked the original ending of Angel, in which Angel killed the serial killer, so scenes were added in which Rory Calhoun's Kit Carson returns to shoot the killer; in the first cut Calhoun's character was meant to die.- Angel cost about $1.5 million to make and was sold to HBO for $4 million, helped by the recent ratings success of the television film Little Ladies of the Night on NBC.
- Angel began as a treatment called Hollywood Starr by Robert Vincent O'Neil, author of Vice Squad, and Joe Cala: a girl abandoned by her father becomes a prostitute and faces a serial killer dressed as Santa who turns out to be her father.
- Donna Wilkes was 24 when she played the 15-year-old Molly. She prepared by talking to real-life street prostitutes on Hollywood Boulevard, spending time with the Los Angeles Police Department and visiting halfway houses for children living on the streets.
- The part played by Susan Tyrrell was originally written for a male actor; casting director Linda Francis suggested casting Tyrrell instead.
- Composer Craig Safan wrote the score for Angel in less than a week; Intrada Records released it on compact disc in 1993.
