Plot summary
Eve Stephens practices law in Los Angeles and is near a judgeship, though a younger woman, Langley Flynn, is being lined up to take her place. In private she is full of self-doubt, troubled by erotic nightmares and by memories of her parents, among them her unfeeling father and her mother, Beth. She finds occasional intense sex, first with a geologist, John, and later with a psychiatrist, Renee, but she brings neither warmth nor commitment to these relationships. Word comes that her sister Maddie, an intelligent but disturbed doctoral student, has been arrested for shoplifting more than once. Eve, who believes her to be a kleptomaniac, bails her out.
