Plot summary

Johnny Baxter learns that his late uncle Jacob Barnesworth has left him the Grand Imperial Hotel in Silver Hill, Colorado. Baxter quits his job and brings his wife Sue and their children west to run it. The building is immense and ramshackle, without heat, and an old man named Jesse McCord lives in a shed on the grounds. The local mechanic, Wally Perkins, explains how much land the hotel sits on, and Baxter sees a ski resort in it. Banker Martin Ridgeway offers to buy the lodge, and when Baxter refuses, Ridgeway turns down his loan request.
