Barton MacLane

Biography

Barton MacLane was an American actor, playwright, and screenwriter whose screen work ran from the 1930s into the 1960s. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, he attended Wesleyan University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his Broadway debut in 1927 and appeared in the Marx Brothers' The Cocoanuts (1929). After writing the play Rendezvous, he signed with Warner Bros. and spent the decade in supporting parts, often as detectives and heavies. He played Steve McBride in most of the Torchy Blane films and Lieutenant Dundy in The Maltese Falcon (1941), then worked with Humphrey Bogart again on The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). Other credits included Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941), Western Union (1941), and The Glenn Miller Story (1954). On television he was a regular on Outlaws and played General Martin Peterson on I Dream of Jeannie from 1965 to 1969. He was honored with a Walk of Fame star for his television work.

Barton MacLane's first movie role, in The Quarterback (1926), came about because of his football ability, which he had shown at Wesleyan University.
Behind the camera
MacLane wrote a play called Rendezvous and sold it to Arthur Hopkins. It was staged on Broadway, and MacLane had a featured part in it.
Big break
MacLane's play Rendezvous was a success, which earned him a contract with Warner Bros. and caught the eye of film directors Fritz Lang, Michael Curtiz and William Keighley.
