Biography

Dana Andrews was an American actor who became a leading man in 1940s film noir and Westerns. Born near Collins, Mississippi, and raised in Huntsville, Texas, he was spotted in a play and signed by Samuel Goldwyn in 1938, then trained at the Pasadena Playhouse before working at 20th Century-Fox. His early roles included The Westerner (1940), Tobacco Road (1941), Ball of Fire (1941), and The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). He became best known as detective Mark McPherson in Laura (1944) and as returning veteran Fred Derry in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), a popular and critical success. Other notable films included State Fair (1945), Fallen Angel (1945), Boomerang! (1947), Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), While the City Sleeps (1956), Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (1956), and Airport 1975 (1974). He became president of the Screen Actors Guild in 1963 and later played college president Tom Boswell on Bright Promise.
