Plot summary
Danny Hawkins grows up in a small Virginia town where everyone remembers that his father was hanged for murder. Children harass him when he is young, and Jerry Sykes, who never lets up, keeps at him once he is grown. At a town dance the two men meet in the woods and fight, and Jerry dies. Danny does not know that his pocket knife slipped away from him there. He dances with Gilly Johnson, who was expected to become engaged to Jerry, then drives her and two friends through the rain, his guilt making him reckless, until the car crashes. Gilly begins to welcome his attention while she wonders why Jerry has not appeared.
