Plot summary
Patrick Martin, called P.M., practices law and runs a ranch in Nogales, Arizona, on the Mexican border. Coming home, he finds his brother Donald in the garage. Donald drank heavily and five years ago went to prison for killing a man in a barroom fight. He had acted in self-defense, yet P.M. never defended him and he was convicted. Now Donald has broken out and wants to reach the Mexican side of Nogales, where his wife and children have almost nothing. The Santa Cruz River is in flood, so no one can cross for days. Nora, P.M.'s wife, married him after Donald was imprisoned and has never been told about him. P.M. presents Donald to her and to his ranch friends as an old friend and keeps him away from whiskey.
