John McIntire
Biography
John McIntire was an American character actor who worked in dozens of films and many television series. Born in Spokane, Washington, and raised largely in Montana around ranchers, he began his career in radio, playing roles in programs such as Crime Doctor and I Love a Mystery. He made his film debut at 40 in The Hucksters (1947) and became known for playing police officers, doctors, judges, and western figures. His notable films included The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Winchester '73 (1950), The Far Country (1954), The Tin Star (1957), Psycho (1960), and Elmer Gantry (1960). On television, he replaced Ward Bond as the lead of Wagon Train, playing Christopher Hale from 1961 to 1965, and later replaced Charles Bickford on The Virginian as Clay Grainger for four seasons. He also voiced Rufus in The Rescuers (1977) and Mr. Digger in The Fox and the Hound (1981), and Turner & Hooch (1989) was his final film.

First role
McIntire took the title part in The Adventures of Bill Lance, a production of a Los Angeles radio station, and he was the first actor cast in the title role of the CBS radio drama Crime Doctor.
Big break
In 1961 McIntire took over the role of trail master Chris Hale on Wagon Train, stepping in for the late Ward Bond. He played Hale in over 150 episodes of the series through 1965.
Own stunts
In the 1950 movie Ambush, McIntire played a Cavalry scout. He acted alongside Robert Taylor, and the role let him show off his horsemanship skills.
