Plot summary
In 1896, Jeff Webster decides the Klondike gold rush is his chance to make a fortune selling beef. He and his partner Ben Tatum drive a herd from Wyoming to Seattle and ship the cattle to Skagway, where Jeff interrupts a hanging and angers Judge Gannon, who jails him and confiscates the herd. Saloon owner Ronda Castle is bound for Alaska with the cattle, and she hires Jeff as her trail boss; leaving requires a hundred dollars in provisions. Renee Vallon, a French-Canadian woman he meets at the jail, takes a liking to him. Jeff and his men slip away with the herd, and Gannon chases them to the Canadian border, promising a hanging if Jeff passes through Skagway again. Ronda and her party rejoin them for the journey to Dawson City.

- The film's villain, Judge Gannon, was loosely based on Soapy Smith, a confidence artist and gang leader who ran Skagway during the Alaska Gold Rush. The real Smith was killed in a gunfight, though not in the way the film shows it.
- The real cattle drive behind the story took the herd to Seattle, then by ship to Skagway and onward to Dawson, a total of about 1,500 miles of driving.
