Plot summary
Miss Peggy Noble, Danny O'Neil's teacher, is engaged to Roy Kelton, the gym teacher nicknamed Jackjaw for his threats to break his pupils' jaws. Danny is fourteen and in love with her. His school days leave him uninspired, and he suffers in silence. Then he sees his friend Lloyd Duffy, an orphan living next door with his uncle Herb and aunt May, grow fruit with an experimental growth accelerator. Danny wants the machine to turn him into a grown man, break up the engagement and win a chance with Miss Noble. Lloyd refuses to help, so Danny breaks into the lab and uses the machine that night, while his parents are away for a week. The next morning the high school takes him for Harold Forndexter, the new principal whose arrival nobody was told about.
