Plot summary

Charley Appleby owns a hardware store in a small Midwestern city during the Depression, and his thrift has kept his family out of poverty. His wife Nettie and their children find him distant, and they long to see the Chicago World's Fair. Sons Willie and Rupert take work at a junkyard run by Felix, who has ties to bootleggers, and teenage daughter Leonora plans to elope with Ray Ferris. An angel visible only to Charley tells him his time is nearly up. Charley resolves to change, patch up his family and sell the store, but his sudden behavior baffles them. At the bank, the banker Ernie tells him it will close for a time and may face foreclosure.
