Plot summary
Mark Chapman has made the New York Express a success with sensational stories, and he keeps ace reporter Steve McCleary close. Julie Allison, a feature writer, dislikes the paper's turn toward muckraking. At a lonely hearts dance the Express organizes, Chapman's estranged wife, Charlotte Grant, spots him and insists he come to her hotel room. She threatens to make his real identity public, and when he strikes her, she falls against a pipe and dies. Chapman arranges the room so the death appears accidental and takes her wedding ring and the badge she had worn. McCleary covers the case, and his reporting turns what the police took for a fall in the bathtub into a murder, which the paper attributes to the Lonely Hearts Killer.
