Plot summary
Bering Joy, an elderly whaling captain out of New Bedford, uses crutches and wants his grandson Jed to continue his education at sea rather than in a schoolroom ashore. He brings the boy before Andrew Bush, the principal who once served under him, for a written examination. Jed fails it, and Bush has the teacher raise the mark from 32 to 70 so the boy may sail. Captain Jason Briggs, owner of the Pride of New Bedford, then gives Joy command of another whaling voyage and introduces Dan Lunceford, a college-educated marine biologist selected as first mate. Joy has no patience for book learning but sees that Lunceford could teach Jed, and once at sea orders the mate to take charge of the boy's lessons.
