Plot summary
Sam Hall, a gunslinger, has shot three farmers and is due to hang at sundown in the town of Gunlock. Sheriff Bill Jorden intends to see the sentence carried out, but the town around him has other plans. Cattlemen want Hall freed, while farmers, afraid the ranchers will spring him, want the hanging done sooner. Fearing a fight between the two sides, Jorden sends for extra help and learns the town's telegraph line has been cut. Farmers ride toward town to kill Hall, and Jorden goes out to meet them and argue for letting the law decide. Jorden also wants to know who hired Hall. Hall, meanwhile, works on an escape with his girlfriend Nellie.
