Plot summary
Port Felicity is a shrimping town on the Louisiana gulf coast, and Navy engineers Steve Martin and Johnny Gambi reach it with plans to drill for oil offshore. Johnny rents a boat from Dominique Rigaud, whose daughter Stella distrusts the two men at once. They use the boat to show a potential investor, Kermit MacDonough, where they mean to drill. Steve says his platform can withstand any storm and claims that a million dollars spent now will tap a reserve worth two billion. MacDonough funds the project despite the doubts of his secretary, Rawlins, but warns Steve that he must find oil within three months.

- While filming on location in Louisiana, Dan Duryea slipped and fell from the roof of a tugboat that appears throughout Thunder Bay. He broke a rib and suffered contusions and bruises, but was able to keep filming after a day or two of rest.
- Thunder Bay was Universal-International's first film with stereophonic sound. It was also originally planned to be photographed in 3-D, but those plans were scrapped sometime during production.
