Plot summary
In the 1890s, Johnny and his girlfriend Frankie are performers aboard a Mississippi riverboat that also carries a casino. Johnny cannot stop gambling, his luck has gone, and he owes money. His friend Cully, a musician and composer, takes him to a gypsy camp, where a woman reads tea leaves and foretells that a red-haired woman will soon enter his life and improve his fortunes. On the boat they run into Nellie Bly, the on-and-off girlfriend of their boss Clint Braden, who has just caught Braden with another singer, Mitzi. Nellie's hair is red, so Johnny asks her to touch his chips for luck. He wins, and takes the gypsy's words as proved. Frankie grows jealous; so does Braden.
