Plot summary
The Frakes make their yearly trip to the Iowa State Fair. Abel Frake wagers neighbor Dave Miller that his boar Blue Boy will take first prize and that the whole family will have a good time. Melissa Frake, his wife, prepares mincemeat with brandy for the food competition. Daughter Margy, engaged to Harry, welcomes the fair as an escape from farm life; son Wayne is sorry his girlfriend Eleanor cannot come. On the grounds, Wayne revisits a ring-toss booth where he was cheated the year before and keeps winning. A young woman intervenes and the barker refunds his money. Margy meets Pat Gilbert, a Des Moines reporter covering the fair, and the two arrange to meet again.
