Plot summary
In Gila Valley, Arizona, Jim Slater meets Karyl Orton, who believes he is hunting a gold cache hidden in the valley. A rifleman shoots at Jim, who kills him and then finds out the man served as a deputy in Silver City. Jim takes the body there, and Sheriff J. C. Marson questions him. Jim explains that he is after whoever is responsible for his father's death. Apaches besieged and killed his father and four other men, and Jim believes a sixth man got away with the gold instead of going for help. Marson warns that the deputy's brothers will want revenge and points him to Sergeant George Lake in Tucson, whose patrol came upon the bodies.
