Chubby Johnson
Biography
Chubby Johnson was an American character actor whose genial manner and warm, country-accented voice suited Westerns and television. Born in Terre Haute, he was the son of entertainers, a vaudeville comedian and a concert pianist, and as a child he performed in vaudeville with his father. Before turning to acting he worked as a journalist, including for the Las Vegas Sun, and he spent five years at Pasadena's Warner Egyptian Theater, where a new play opened each week. His screen work began with a small uncredited role as a homesteader in the Randolph Scott Western Abilene Town, and he accumulated more than 80 screen credits from 1946 to 1972. On television he often played deputies and stagecoach drivers, with eight roles on Maverick and repeated appearances on Bonanza, Gunsmoke and The Rifleman. Johnson died in 1974.
